Hansom Hall
Conference Centre
Built in the 1830's, the original architect of the building was Joseph Aloysius Hansom as the blue plaque on the wall explains. He was one of the most famous architects ever to work in Leicester and there are still over 200 buildings he designed standing across the country, including Birmingham Town Hall and the New Walk Museum. He also founded the eminent architectural journal, ‘The Builder’ which is still published today as ‘Building’. He was also made famous through his invention of the Hansom Cab.
The view of the hall that most people will be familiar with is the curved end of the hall on Belvoir Street next to the entrance to the Central Lending Library. It is this view that lead to the building being nicknamed the ‘pork pie chapel’.
Today the Hall is an integral part of the Leicester Adult Education College providing modern conference facilities for up to 100 people.
